Mommy Love was founded by a Mommy and Daddy who understand the pain and discomfort of pregnancy. Hi, I’m Stacy, and I’d like to share our story with you. Through the pregnancy of our 5th child, the pain in my lower back became unbearable. We went to the doctor countless times, only to be told to try to support my back or belly in different ways using bed pillows or wedges – nothing worked (and my wonderful obstetrician, who I adore, would jokingly remind me that, being in my late 30’s with this pregnancy, I was going to be more uncomfortable as a “mature” pregnant woman. Ha ha Dr. T. - thanks a lot!). I was eventually sent to physical therapy where I met my wonderful therapist, who had me lie on my stomach at our firs session – instant relief! I was amazed! I had no idea that, as hugely pregnant as I was, I could lie on my stomach. I also couldn’t believe that all of the discomfort I had experienced for months went away instantly! The problem was, to lie in this position I had to lie on a mound of bed pillows to support my belly and keep my spine straight. I wanted to be able to lie like this at home, but didn’t want to have to buy 10 pillows to do so! So my husband and I did some checking around, and found that, while there are other devices in the clinical market for pregnant women to lie on their stomachs (prone), they were expensive, didn’t easily conform to different body types (in other words – my ever expanding body!) and were only marketed for professional use, nothing for the mom at home . So, after much research, trial and error, prayers, sweat and tears, and the medical advice of the many therapists who had a hand in the design (thanks guys!) – The Sophie was born (and patented!)! Also, Sophia, our beautiful baby girl, was born too! We were received by the therapy and chiropractic communities with open arms – finally a cushion that they could lie their clients in that was safe, affordable, portable, and conformed to different body types and weights through each stage of pregnancy. They could also recommend to their clients to use The Sophie at home (hello massages by the hubby!).

After our initial success with The Sophie, we had a new reason to design another pregnancy cushion – this time for pregnant women to be able to lie on their sides. The inspiration for this cushion?

Baby #6 was on her way, and the only position I could lie in to relieve my discomfort when I wasn’t lying on my stomach was on my side. Lying on my stomach gave me such relief, even though I’ve never been a stomach sleeper, although many moms who use our Sophie are, and are amazed that they can lie on their stomachs to nap or get a massage – like me, they had no idea it was possible. But pregnant with Stella (hence the cushion being named The Stelly-Belly!), I enjoyed lying in The Sophie to rest and get massaged, but found more relief this time around in lying on my side due to the way Stella was positioned in my belly (her feet were permanently planted behind my hip bone for 9 months! Little Stinker!). I tried the various wedges and cushions on the market, but the problem I found with them was that, while the wedge would support my belly, or the cushion would go between my knees, etc. etc., my back just wasn’t supported enough, and I felt like gravity just kept wanting to pull me flat on my back. This was helped by putting bed pillows behind me, but not enough, and it seemed to me that there should be a wedge that offered a strong back support that could actually hold me in place instead of crushing under my weight. So, back to the process that brought us The Sophie, and, right around the time our Stella was born, The Stelly-Belly made its debut!
